Decolonizing Psychoanalytic Technique: From Repressed Histories to Pragmatic Practices

February 3, 2024 @ 9:00 am - 10:30 am PST

This presentation will review the oft-ignored history of decolonial thinking among global south psychoanalysts going back to the inception of the field, and derive from it a series of clinical principles for psychotherapeutic practice today. These clinical principles, read through the work of revolutionary psychiatrist Frantz Fanon, help us connect therapeutic action to political action off the couch and in the streets.

Presenter

Daniel José Gaztambide, PsyD

Daniel José Gaztambide, PsyD, is assistant professor of psychology at Queens College, where he also directs the Frantz Fanon Lab for Decolonial Psychology. He is the author of the book A People’s History of Psychoanalysis: From Freud to Liberation Psychology and the upcoming Decolonizing Psychoanalytic Technique: Putting Freud on Fanon’s Couch. Dr. Gaztambide is in analytic training at the NYU Post-Doctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis, and is a member of the Puerto Rican Poetry Troupe, the Titere Poets.
