On the Place of the Social Unconscious: Implications for Psychoanalytic Thought and Practice

The current moment in psychoanalytic thinking has made a “turn towards the social,” but what does this mean in theoretical and practical terms. This presentation aims to provide a conceptual basis for the Social Unconscious as a register grounded in groups, and operating as a different kind of psychic life than what we are used to when we think of the personal unconscious. If we take the concept of the Social Unconscious seriously, this implies a fundamental change in our theoretical frameworks. And has implications for opening up the terrain of psychoanalytic practice, including the recovery and validation of the history of community psychoanalysis and new elaborations of training and practice.

Francisco J. González, MD, is Personal & Supervising Analyst, Community Psychoanalysis Supervising Analyst, and Faculty at the Psychoanalytic Institute of Northern California (PINC), where he also helped found and serves as Co-Director of the Community Psychoanalysis Track. He is on the faculty of the NYU Postdoctoral Program in Psychoanalysis and a Supervising Analyst at the Massachusetts Institute for Psychoanalysis. Recognized this year as a Distinguished Psychoanalytic Educator by the International Forum for Psychoanalytic Education, his teaching and writing focuses on the articulation of the social within individual and collective psychic life and has been the recipient of the Symonds Award, the Ralph E. Roughton Paper Award, and co-recipient of the JAPA Award for the Best Published Paper 2019. He serves on the editorial boards of Psychoanalytic Dialogues and JAPA and on the Holmes Commission on Racial Equality in American Psychoanalysis. He practices privately in San Francisco and Oakland and in the public domain at Instituto Familiar de la Raza in San Francisco.
