Laplanche in the Consulting Room: Considerations for an Emerging Paradigm

From Queer Studies to Black Studies, from psychoanalysis to literature, the work of Jean Laplanche is becoming increasingly popular in the United States. Yet both because of his reputation and the inaccessibility of some of his written works, many feel intimidated or put-off by the possibility of engaging actively with his scholarship. This conversation is designed for clinicians and thinkers who consider themselves “Laplanche-curious,” those interested in learning more about Laplanche’s ideas from a foundational perspective. Together, we will use straightforward, contemporary language alongside real-world clinical examples to illustrate the major foundational concepts in Laplanche.

Sam Guzzardi, LCSW
Sam Guzzardi is a New York City-based psychoanalyst trained at the Institute for the Psychoanalytic Study of Subjectivity, IPSS. His written work has appeared in The Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association, Psychoanalytic Dialogues, and other major analytic publications. Sam’s paper “The Only Fag Around: Twinship in Gay Childhood” has won several awards, including the Ralph Roughton Award at APsA. His clinical work focuses on questions of gender, identity, trauma, and loss. Sam’s most recently published piece, “Towards a Queered Psychology of the Self: Empathy and Passibility from the Margin to the Center,” was released in Psychology, Self, and Context in January. He is excited to be presenting his latest thinking on the clinical implications of Jean Laplanche’s theories in anticipation of his forthcoming publications in this area.
