Sport Psychology meets Psychoanalysis

November 15 @ 9:00 am - 10:30 am PST

Sport psychology is the encounter between psychology and sport science. It comprehends different interventions in sport context, such as with athletes, coaches and teams. The individual intervention is usually focused on the improvement of the performance and Cognitive-Behavioral Theory is one of the main approaches. However, it is impossible to separate athletes from human beings with their story, organizing principles and ways of being-with-the-other. Moreover, also in this kind of intervention, it is fundamental reflecting on the relationship and the intersubjective field. What could psychoanalysis offer to sport psychology and vice versa? Starting from the experience as a former athlete, as a relational and self-psychology psychoanalyst and as a sport psychologist, this topic will be explored, and clinical examples will be presented to emphasize the possibility of an enriching exchange for both disciplines.
