Series: Decentralized Learning Experiences
A learning experience can be almost anything, and any licensed clinician can propose one. It can be about a paper, a book or a movie. It can tackle an idea, such as field theory or dream analysis or focus on the work of a theorist. The format can be didactic or it can be a leaderless seminar or a one-hour conversation. It can be a one-off event or a series of weekly, biweekly, or monthly meetings. Currently, this program is in its pilot stage, so certain limits may apply.
Psychoanalytic Inquiry’s Learning Experiences are free.
Not all events are recorded. When we record an event it can be found in the archive.

From the Tragic to the Spiritual – Transcending the ‘I’ – January 18th | 9:00 – 10:30 AM PT
Andrea Shalom Kornhauser, Ph.D. & Uri Movshovitz, Ph.D.
Exposition of the psychoanalytic venue from the classical drive theory to the notion of selfobject as introduced by Heinz Kohut. In departing from the ‘I’ and its psychoanalytic manifestation as ego, self psychology introduced the notion of self as a wholesome, evolving experience, rather than seeing the self as a definite entity. The shift from ego to self and from self to selfobject psychology, marks an evolutional leap from the guilty ego to the tragic self, and to the spiritual dimension of the psyche.
The exploration and expansion of the spiritual, is ought to be interwoven with philosophy, psychology and the contemplative-meditative practice of Buddhism. As keenly expressed by one of the precious Buddhist teachers: “I hope that you understand what the word “spiritual” means. It means to search for, to investigate the true nature of the mind. There is nothing spiritual outside. My rosary isn’t spiritual; My robes aren’t spiritual. Spiritual means the mind, and the spiritual people are those who seek its nature” (Lama Yeshe).
