Series: Decentralized Learning Experiences

A learning experience can be almost anything, and any licensed clinician can propose one. It can be about a paper, a book or a movie. It can tackle an idea, such as field theory or dream analysis or focus on the work of a theorist. The format can be didactic or it can be a leaderless seminar or a one-hour conversation. It can be a one-off event or a series of weekly, biweekly, or monthly meetings. Currently, this program is in its pilot stage, so certain limits may apply.

Psychoanalytic Inquiry’s Learning Experiences are free.

Not all events are recorded. When we record an event it can be found in the archive.

Empathy – The Psychoanalytic Matrix of Non-Duality – February 15th | 9:00 – 10:30 AM PT

Orly Shoshani, Ph.D. & Karina Goldberg Ph.D.

“It is human empathy, as we mirror and confirm the other and as the other confirms and mirrors us, that protects an enclave of human meaning – of hate, love, triumph and defeat – with the universe of senseless spaces and crazily racing stars.” (Kohut 1975). Through the cultivation of empathy, Kohut’s radical work delineated a systematic analytic stance of “two who are experientially one”. The patient and analyst are not separate entities engaged in an interaction but rather are a wholesome unit in a state of interbeing (Hanh, 1988). Self psychology offers a profound insight into the core and essence of human relations; a state of being that is rather inclusive rather than partitive and thus allows for an experience of non-duality.
