Freud’s conception of narcissism was always grounded in his drive theories. He initially identified narcissism as a disposition of the libidinal drive in which it takes the ego as its love object (this is self-love). Subsequently, with his elaboration of the death drive concept, Freud introduced a second narcissistic disposition which entailed a destructive attitude to the object. This was called destructive narcissism (object-hate); a concept which was developed further by the British Kleinians. In this talk, Mark Solms will consider the implications for our understanding of narcissism if there are not two drives but rather seven – as modern neurobiology suggests.
